Security researchers at ESET have uncovered twelve Android apps that have been caught secretly recording users' audio in the background. These apps are designed to infect your phone with spyware called VajraSpy. This sneaky software spreads through social engineering tactics on platforms like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
Here's a list of the apps you should remove immediately if you have them installed:
- TikTalk
- MeetMe
- Let’s Chat
- Quick Chat
- Chit Chat
- YohooTalk
- Hello Cha
- Rafaqat
- Privee Talk
- Nidus
- GlowChat
- Wave Chat
How can you protect yourself from this sneaky spyware?
The most important thing is to be careful where you download your apps. Stick to the official Android app stores and avoid downloading apps from links, especially those sent through chat apps. Always check the developer's name and ratings, review the permissions the app requests, and read the most recent user reviews before installing anything.
Also, keep your operating system updated and enable Google Play Protect. Limit app permissions to only what's necessary, and be alert for any unusual behavior after you install an app you're unsure about.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Watch out for signs that your device may be compromised. These include unusual battery drain, unexplained data usage, or persistent background activity you can't explain. In the case of VajraSpy, unexpected microphone prompts are a major red flag, and repeated permission requests deserve extra scrutiny.
If you notice these signs, or if you see notifications that appear briefly and then disappear, or if your contacts are receiving strange messages from you, your device may have been infected with malware.
How to stay safe?
Make sure your device is protected by one of the best Android antivirus apps, which can scan for malware in real-time. These programs often offer additional features like VPNs and scam alerts, which can further protect your privacy and keep you safe online.
Even though these malicious apps were discovered some time ago, they can still cause damage. That's why I always recommend limiting the number of apps you have installed overall. That way, if one turns out to be malicious or goes bad over time, it will be much easier to identify.
